The Hypothetical Theatre Company, Inc.
is a not-for-profit professional producing company in New York
City. The Hypothetical is known throughout the city for producing cutting-edge NY
Premieres of plays. Award winning playwright, Michael Weller (Hair,
Ragtime, Loose Ends, Moonchildren, etc.) has chosen Hypothetical
as a host company to premiere his plays.
Hypothetical produced Mr. Weller's Ghost on Fire and The Heart of Art to critical acclaim by the NY Times and other media. Hypothetical produced the successful premieres of Detail of a Larger Work by Lisa Dillman which was ranked in the top five shows of 1998 by Theatre Scope magazine, and Mickey's Home by award winning playwright Stephen Fife. Most recently produced was the New York premiere of Michael McKeever's The Garden of Hannah List (winner of the 1998 Carbonell Award), which set new attendance records for the company, and earned rave reviews.
The Hypothetical also works to educate youth and the public through several outreach programs. Notable has been the joint effort with the National Park Service to achieve NPS' educational goals through the creation of theatrical programming. From 1992 to 1999, Hypothetical's members worked alongside National Park staff to present various dramatic programs for public viewing during peak visitor season at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. These visitors are made up of students of all ages, families, senior citizens, and people from every state in the country and every nation in the world. The Hypothetical has received several letters of support from the visitors to Ellis Island and is the subject of local, regional, and national news coverage.
The Hypothetical Theatre Company has a commitment to Arts in Education, and develops touring programs based on curriculum support to lend relevance and deeper understanding to the classroom experience for students.
